Welcome and Introduction

The world of work has guided most of us into an employee mindset. Suddenly finding themselves at the top of the pyramid doesn’t occur to many Freelancers or Entrepreneurs immediately. That realisation will come as a powerful one, but it shouldn’t be a shock. After all, a world of opportunity awaits you as your own boss—and the people you’ll encounter along the way are, on the whole, reasonable potential sources of custom.

First things first—special congratulations are due from us at IxDF on your commitment to realise your goal. You’ve gone a long way to building the knowledge base that can make your enterprise take off and go far. Now it’s time to look at a big part of this dynamic—we ask ourselves: “What sort of people are we going to deal with out there?”

It’s time to explore the sorts of mind-sets you might encounter. Before we can do that, you may need to do something first. Remember that job that you’re hoping to leave soon—or may have already left? We know how it is. A person doesn’t spend so long working for an employer and wake up one day forgetting what that was like. It’s natural, but we’ll show you how to leave that old way behind. As a Freelancer or Entrepreneur, you are the boss.

To help you be your own boss, we’ve factored in everything you’ll need here—how to draft a contract in just nine steps, one that can keep you safe and content, and understanding every aspect of giving customer service. Are you the sort of person who hates conflict? Not to worry—while we all know that angry customers come in all shapes and sizes, the good news is this: we have the ways here to bring even the nastiest-sounding person round. You may even get a massive apology.

The theme is your self-image as a boss and a business owner. You didn’t want to leave your job just to trade one anger-management nutcase of a boss for another, after all. We will show you how to fire the ones who become real pains and, of course, how to get every penny you’re due.
