Verified Competencies Demonstrated by Pedro Martins Dos Santos
By completing this curriculum to the standards of the IxDF Educational Codex, Pedro Martins Dos Santos has demonstrated mastery of how to:
- Create intuitive digital products by imitating physicality, so users instantly understand new products through their lifelong experience of the physical world.
- Analyze and design across the four aspects of physicality (physical devices, physical space, the human body, and digital artifacts) to create products that work with how people actually live in the world.
- Diagnose where digital and mechanical systems break the three rules of simple physicality (directness of effort, locality of effect, and visibility of state) to design more comprehensible, less error-prone products.
- Untangle and design the multiple feedback loops in a physical-digital device, so users always feel clearly and correctly informed about what their actions have done.
- Model a device's purely physical interactions, independent of its electronics, using Alan Dix's physigrams to expose and resolve subtle interaction problems before building anything.
- Design the mapping between a control's physical state and a system's logical state to make products that are powerfully simple to understand and use.
- Apply controls whose automatic behavior mirrors the user's own actions (such as a kettle switch that pops back up by itself) and bounce-back controls, so a product's behavior matches users' deep, instinctive physical expectations.
- Time and design feedback to avoid the "GUI fallacy" and prevent user errors, even when a product's effects are delayed, remote, or hidden.
- Judge what a product gains and loses when it becomes digital, deciding which physical qualities to preserve and which expectations can be safely relaxed, so design choices keep products understandable rather than confusing or unsettling.
- Account for the spatial relationship between user, device, and environment to design interactions that fit how and where people actually use a product, whether alone or collaboratively.
- Accommodate the human body's reach, visual field, and emotional pacing to design products that are usable, safe, and humane.
- Design physical feedback clear enough to support reliable, eyes-free use when a user's attention is divided, such as while driving, walking, or being interrupted.
