Verified Competencies Demonstrated by Ibrahim Özkan

By completing this curriculum to the standards of the IxDF Educational Codex, Ibrahim Özkan has demonstrated mastery of how to:

  • Design for the full spectrum of human ability and account for vision, hearing, cognitive, and motor needs across age groups, contexts, and temporary or situational impairments.

  • Apply accessibility as a design quality discipline, not only a compliance requirement, and use accessibility techniques to make products clearer, faster, and easier for every user, including people navigating in low-light, noisy, mobile, distracted, one-handed, or temporarily impaired contexts.

  • Deliver accessible experiences across mobile, VR, AR, and emerging platforms and, maintain the cross-channel consistency that builds user trust at every touchpoint.

  • Apply WCAG 2.2 and its four pillars (Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust) to satisfy global accessibility laws (ADA, Section 508, the European Accessibility Act, EN 301 549) and make informed trade-offs between AA and AAA conformance based on real user impact.

  • Audit accessibility with industry-standard tools, including Axe, WAVE, and screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack), and interpret results with the critical judgment to distinguish genuine issues from false positives, tool limitations, and the superficial fixes promised by accessibility overlay widgets.

  • Validate accessibility through the triangulated approach (automated scans, WCAG guidelines review, and tests with real users who have disabilities), recognizing that no single layer is sufficient on its own.

  • Guide front-end accessibility decisions across semantic HTML5, CSS, and ARIA, determine when ARIA strengthens a design and when it undermines it, and collaborate effectively with developers to make the right calls.

  • Build accessible interactions and components (images, forms, tables, search, pop-ups, dialogs, and iframes) and prevent third-party integrations from compromising the user experience downstream.

  • Manage third-party accessibility risk through pre-purchase vendor testing, VPAT documentation, and contractual accessibility requirements to protect procurement decisions, support compliance in government and enterprise contracts, and prevent inaccessible vendor products from undermining your own work.

  • Design seamless keyboard, focus, and navigation experiences that use semantic structure to intuitively guide screen reader users, keyboard users, power users, and anyone working without a mouse through a page.

·       Apply the five-second rule (WCAG 2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide) to dynamic content to ensure users can pause, stop, or hide it in distracting, cognitively demanding, or motion-sensitive contexts.

  • Eliminate visual bias from the design process and build accessibility in from the wireframe stage through focus indicators, color contrast, logical tab order, labeled controls, and content-blocking techniques to create cleaner, faster, more navigable products for keyboard-only users, mobile users, low-vision users, and anyone in a high-distraction or low-light context, rather than retrofitting accessibility at the end.

  • Build the business case for accessibility and articulate its impact on usability, SEO, market reach, legal risk, and ROI to move stakeholders from compliance-as-obligation to accessibility-as-competitive-advantage.

  • Produce accessible content and documents, write in plain English for cognitive accessibility, and create compliant PDFs that extend reach beyond the web.

  • Distinguish inclusive design as a strategic discipline from accessibility and usability, and recognize accessibility as the practical first step and inclusive design as the aspirational goal of designing for the widest range of users and contexts.

  • Conduct accessibility-driven user research, build disability personas grounded in field studies, map user journeys against assistive technology contexts, and apply WCAG success criteria to real user goals rather than abstract checklists.

  • Establish programs, roadmaps, component libraries, and test cases to scale accessibility across entire organizations and build lifecycle maturity using frameworks (GSA five-play model, Section 508 standards, C-level accountability structures).

  • Lead end-to-end accessibility testing with users who have disabilities, run formative and summative studies, recruit and moderate with appropriate adaptations, observe assistive technology in real-world contexts, and translate findings into shipped improvements.
