Verified Competencies Demonstrated by Gloria Alcayaga

By completing this curriculum to the standards of the IxDF Educational Codex, Gloria Alcayaga has demonstrated mastery of how to:

  • Define usability testing, decide when to use it over related methods, and set clear usability goals.
  • Make the business case for usability testing and establish it as a recurring part of the design process to embed it in a team's culture.
  • Build a structured test plan grounded in linked user and business objectives, select the appropriate type of test for the situation, and capture the right metrics for the design decision at hand.
  • Determine an appropriate sample size for the chosen test type, defend that number to stakeholders unfamiliar with qualitative research, and screen and recruit the ideal participants.
  • Write well-formed, scenario-based test tasks using realistic, non-leading language that results in natural user behavior.
  • Conduct a pilot ("dry run") test to surface and fix problems before testing with real participants.
  • Moderate a usability test effectively and maintain control of a session.
  • Observe without bias by keeping personal and organizational agendas out of observation.
  • Analyze test results, write a concise, persuasive usability test report, and then use findings to influence and negotiate with stakeholders.
  • Build user empathy and advocacy among stakeholders by having them observe live sessions firsthand.
  • Decide when and how often to test, prioritizing early and iterative testing to catch issues while they are still cheap to fix.
  • Avoid common data-quality traps, including over-reliance on user self-reporting and the misuse of remote tools that don't capture true metrics.
  • Protect participant wellbeing and brand reputation by recognizing and avoiding "user emotion traps" so participants leave emotionally neutral.
