Verified Competencies Demonstrated by Jenna Forrey

By completing this curriculum to the standards of the IxDF Educational Codex, Jenna Forrey has demonstrated mastery of how to:

  • Design complete, player-centered gamification systems that turn ordinary tasks into experiences users genuinely want to engage with
  • Distinguish gamification from game design and conventional video games, and present a grounded view of the evidence for its effectiveness.
  • Evaluate when gamification is the right solution, and when it's not.
  • Conduct player research using demographics to inform design decisions for large player populations.
  • Build gamification-specific player personas that capture player needs, motivations, and play styles.
  • Identify and design for Bartle's four player types (Socializers, Explorers, Achievers, and Killers) and match mechanics to the player types
  • Distinguish intrinsic from extrinsic motivators and apply Daniel Pink's autonomy–mastery–meaning framework to match motivation type to task complexity, recognizing when extrinsic rewards help and when they undermine performance.
  • Apply the four types of fun (hard, easy, serious, and people fun) to ensure a gamified experience delivers genuine enjoyment appropriate to the task.
  • Apply the Fogg Behavior Model (trigger, ability, and motivation) to diagnose why a desired behavior isn't happening and address the right factor before adding motivators.
  • Apply Csikszentmihalyi's concept of flow to balance challenge against player skill and ramp difficulty as players improve to sustain engagement over time.
  • Draw on the full range of motivational drivers (collecting, connecting with a wider world, achievement, the need for feedback, self-expression, reciprocity, and blissful productivity) to engage players.
  • Define and articulate a clear gamification mission tied to a concrete business objective, and manage the mission as an ongoing, iterative process
  • Run a three-step mission analysis: assess the current scenario, understand the sponsoring business customer and desired outcome, and translate findings into a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound) mission.
  • Select from a broad catalog of gamification elements, including points, badges, leaderboards, levels, quests, narrative, loss aversion, progression, reward schedules, countdowns, challenge, epic meaning, and community collaboration, and combine them so they fit together naturally and serve the mission without overwhelming players.
  • Anticipate where gamification elements motivate and where they risk discouraging players.
  • Design the player journey (onboarding, scaffolding, and progress feedback) to welcome, support, and retain players as they advance.
  • Monitor player motivation across the player lifecycle (rookie, regular, master) and recognize and counter player fatigue.
  • Measure gamification elements against appropriate metrics to evaluate whether the system is achieving its mission.
  • Prepare gamification for success in an enterprise setting by securing an executive sponsor and building an accurate budget.
  • Choose and execute a rollout strategy and plan for technical support after launch.
  • Account for the privacy, workers' rights legislation, ethical, and legal considerations unique to enterprise gamification from the earliest design phase.
