Verified Competencies Demonstrated by Gerardo

By completing this curriculum to the standards of the IxDF Educational Codex, Gerardo has demonstrated mastery of how to:

  • Identify and apply the seven elements of visual design (line, shape, negative space, volume, value, color, and texture) as the building blocks of any composition.

  • Use the seven principles of visual design (unity, gestalt, hierarchy, balance, contrast, scale, and dominance) to create consistent, polished layouts.

  • Critique and explain why a design works using established design vocabulary, a key skill for design reviews and stakeholder conversations.

  • Apply Dieter Rams' ten principles of good design (innovative, useful, aesthetic, understandable, unobtrusive, honest, long-lasting, thorough, environmentally friendly, and minimal) as a framework for critiquing and creating work that stands the test of time.

  • Read and discuss type fluently through type anatomy, including baseline, x-height, cap height, ascenders, descenders, counters, serifs, and stems.

  • Pair typefaces effectively across the five common type classifications (Serif, Sans Serif, Monospace, Script, and Display) and work confidently within type families and superfamilies.

  • Adjust kerning, leading, and tracking to communicate tone and ensure legibility and clarity across any medium.

  • Apply color theory and the seven main color schemes (monochromatic, analogous, complementary, split-complementary, triadic, tetradic, and square) to create harmonious, on-brand interfaces.

  • Select the correct color mode (RGB, CMYK, LAB, Index, Greyscale, and Bitmap) to optimize quality and file size across digital and print.

  • Use color symbolism and cultural context to evoke the intended emotional response and strengthen visual communication.

  • Apply the seven common grid systems (rule of thirds, golden section, single-column, multi-column, modular, baseline, and responsive) to bring structure and consistency to any layout.

  • Build responsive layouts using columns, gutters, margins, and breakpoints to deliver a consistent user experience across devices and screen sizes.

  • Organize information beyond the grid using the eight typographic systems (axial, radial, dilatational, random, grid, modular, transitional, and bilateral) for more intentional compositions.

  • Use analog methods like sketching, journey mapping, and paper prototyping to generate ideas quickly and validate concepts before moving to digital.
