Verified Competencies Demonstrated by Amrutha Murthy

By completing this curriculum to the standards of the IxDF Educational Codex, Amrutha Murthy has demonstrated mastery of how to:

  • Design visual products that accommodate the physiology of human vision so that interfaces work with, rather than against, the way users actually see.
  • Critically evaluate existing real-world designs against principles of visual perception, object perception, color vision, and human eye physiology to identify what works, what fails, and why.
  • Apply the Gestalt principles of perceptual organization (Pragnanz, similarity, proximity, common fate, familiarity/meaningfulness, and continuity, plus the newer principles of common region, element connectedness, and synchrony) to group, structure, and clarify on-screen elements.
  • Use figure/ground organization and perceptual segregation to direct attention and make key elements stand out from their background.
  • Place critical information, alerts, and controls in line with foveal vision and the user's current point of fixation to ensure important elements aren't lost.
  • Apply theories of object perception, including Marr's Computational Approach, Treisman's Feature Integration Theory, and Biederman's Recognition-by-Components (geons), to design screen elements that are quickly identified, selected, and distinguished from competing items.
  • Apply an understanding of color vision to make color choices that aid rather than hinder user comprehension.
  • Manage the three factors that govern color discrimination (paleness, size, and separation) and the three properties of color (hue, chroma, and lightness) to keep color-coded information legible and fast to interpret.
  • Build accessible designs for the roughly 8% of men and 0.5% of women with a color vision deficit, using safe color choices and redundant cues so no user is excluded by color alone.
  • Design color schemes, combinations, and text treatments that remain usable under varying light conditions and avoid slowing user productivity.
  • Recognize how memory, expectation, and learned associations shape what users actually see (drawing on the constructivist and ecological approaches) and design interfaces that work with those mental models rather than against them.
  • Capture and hold user attention so that important information and carefully designed features are noticed and not overlooked.
  • Choose and deploy imagery effectively, using information-rich images over filler, so visuals communicate the intended message rather than simply decorate.
  • Leverage the superior recall and recognition of images over words to reduce cognitive load, support recognition-based scanning, and improve overall user experience and productivity.
  • Design around the physiological blind spot, arranging displays so must-see information is never placed where the user will physically miss it.
  • Design effective icons using sound function-to-icon mapping (literal, analogical, or arbitrary) and the seven principles of effective icon design, while avoiding the common icon-design mistakes that confuse users.
