Coffee Meetup

Date: Saturday, December 5, 2026 (I’m flexible with the date if this one isn’t convenient for most people.)
Location: Houston, TX. Exact venue/address will be updated closer to the event.
What if our next UX project wasn't just another case study?
For this meetup, I was thinking to bring IxDF Houston UX community together to explore, research, design, and potentially launch a real product.
Rather than arriving with a predetermined app or website idea, we'll start where good UX should start: with a problem worth solving.
And don’t worry, we’re not setting out to build something complicated, costly, or overly ambitious from day one. The goal is to start small: identify a simple problem in our community where a thoughtful UX solution could make a meaningful difference, then research it properly and build from there. It could be something as focused as helping people discover local volunteer opportunities, making it easier for newcomers to Houston to find useful community resources, connecting small nonprofits with volunteers, creating a better way to report and track neighborhood issues, helping seniors navigate local services, or designing a simple platform that connects UX students with real community projects. Small problem, thoughtful solution, real users, measurable impact, and if what we create shows genuine potential, we can decide together how far we want to take it.
During our first meetup, we'll get to know one another, decide and discuss potential problem spaces and ideas, and begin deciding what our group could work on together.
Once we choose a direction, the goal is to take the project through a genuine UX process, not a simulated portfolio exercise.
We could work together on:
Identifying and defining a real problem
User and market research
Interviews, surveys, and competitive research
Personas, journeys, and problem definition
Ideation and collaborative workshops
Information architecture and user flows
Wireframes and prototypes
Usability testing and iteration
UI and visual design
Creating a working website or app
And, if the idea proves worthwhile, eventually taking it toward development and launch
This Is More Than a Workshop
The idea is to create an opportunity for UX designers at different stages of their careers to work together on something real.
You don't need to be an expert. Junior designers, students, experienced UX/UI designers, researchers, product designers, and people transitioning into UX, like myself, are all welcome.
And because this is a collaborative project, the work won't end when the meetup ends. We hope to continue meeting, researching, designing, testing, and improving the product as a group.
What About Cost?
For now, there is no cost to participate or contribute to the project.
Our initial focus is simply on finding a worthwhile problem and seeing what we can create together.
If the project eventually reaches a stage where we decide to develop, host, publish, market, or launch the product, there may be costs involved. If that happens, we'll discuss those decisions transparently as a group before anyone contributes financially.
And if we ultimately create something that can generate revenue, we'd love to explore how the project could become sustainable, and perhaps even profitable.
What We'll Do at Meetup #1
This first gathering is about forming the team and finding our direction.
We'll introduce ourselves, talk about our UX backgrounds and interests, brainstorm real problems we think are worth solving, discuss possible project ideas, and decide how we want to organize the collaboration going forward.
You don’t need to arrive with a fully formed idea. Just bring a few topics, everyday challenges, or problems you’ve noticed that you think could be solved or improved through thoughtful design. We’ll explore them together, ask questions, and decide as a group which idea is worth taking forward.

An IxDF Local Group connects you with people in your city who are building and applying design skills in their work. Together, you'll strengthen your craft, expand your network, and put theory into practice.
IxDF Local Groups meet regularly in person at cafés, company offices, or creative spaces to share ideas, give feedback, run workshops, and learn from each other. Many groups also organize IxDF Design Dinners, where the conversation goes deeper over a meal. These aren't just social events. Members find collaborators, clients, job leads, and future teammates through them.
You'll also have access to a private online forum where you can get career advice, honest feedback, and support from people who understand the work.
You don't need to have a "designer" title to join. If you care about how design shapes products, careers, and organizations, you belong here.
Join and you'll discover new skills, explore job opportunities, and build relationships with people who understand the power of great design.
Your IxDF Local Leader organizes meetups based on what members want most. Sessions range from hands-on and structured to relaxed and informal.
Some examples of what you'll find:
Presentations from local designers, followed by Q&A
Lightning talks where members share lessons learned from real projects
Workshops where you work through a real design challenge together
Portfolio reviews where you get honest, practical feedback
Coffee meetups and design dinners with open conversations about where the industry is heading
Any member can propose, organize and post a meetup. You don't have to wait for your Local Leader to take the initiative.
What stays consistent is the people. You'll find designers and professionals who ask good questions, share what they know, and show up for each other between meetups too.
Yes, absolutely!
Design skills make you more effective in any role. Product managers, developers, marketers, researchers, and founders all work better when they understand how to think like a designer.
IxDF Local Groups reflect that. Members come from all kinds of professional backgrounds, not just design. What they share is an interest in how design shapes products, decisions, and careers.
You'll fit right in regardless of your background.
In a world that's getting more artificial and competitive, IxDF brings the heart back, so you never have to face the job market alone.
Learn together, get mentored, find your next job, and build friendships that grow your career.
