Amsterdam UX/UI Book Club

Hi everyone!

---------- GROUP AND EVENT UPDATE!!! ----------

I am very happy to announce that we have a location for our first Amsterdam UX/UI Bookclub meeting! 🎉🎊🎉

Our meeting will take place at Ngrane, which kindly offered the place and will be part of this event. 🙏🏽

There's still time to read this fantastic book by Don Norman - if you haven't read it yet, I'm sure you'll never look at life around you in the same way (and kicking off the new year with fresh perspectives is never a bad idea, right?). 🤓

This group aims to create an open environment for conversation and exchange. Come and share your impressions about the reading, how it applies or not to your professional lives, how we can re-interpret the book's insights across time, and much more!

And if your brain is already firing with insights or questions, why not share them in the group?

See you on the other side! 🤗

Hi all! Please use this discussion thread to discuss NL UX|UI Designers and Researchers, let's have a bookclub! held on Dec 1, 2022. Feel free to ask questions about the place, date and time, agenda of the meeting, or anything else.

While I love the idea, I would appreciate having another way to communicate about the meetup, e.g. a few days before the event perhaps creating a Whatsapp group so we can get notified of any last-minute changes or know if we should wait for someone or not. The last time nobody showed up, there was no update from the organizer, neither before nor after the date. It’s unpleasant to show up and not see even the organizer at the location. And also update here or cancel it in case that’s the case, so no event is up and running here if it’s not happening. Thank you!

Hello Elise, I totally agree with you! I can create the WhatsApp group after counting how many we are since I don't know if everyone will be ok of being part of a public WhatsApp group (if linked here, because this page appears to everyone online). But having an instant messaging possibility is definitely crucial.

I understand and I think you can share a link to the Whatsapp group chat so only those who want can join it from here :)

Thanks for your initiative Giselle! Unfortunately, I’m not available on Thursdays until January. However, I’d love to stay up to date about the bookclub. Whatsapp is not something I use, but I do see the communication flaws here too. Can we look at a more inclusive, privacy safe and open alternative than Whatsapp? eg. Storygraph, Bookclubs, or other messaging apps like Signal?

Hi Monique, thank you for your suggestions! I'll do some research here to see what could be a more appropriate communication tool. The book club meeting will take place in January, so maybe you could come! I set the date of 1st December on the IxDF calendar just to see how many people will be interested first, to better organize it. 😊

Hi Giselle, great initiative! what time are you thinking about the book club? If you can’t find a place, the OBA Central is always a good place to meet

ouh, that’s so pity that I missed the date. I have just arrived in Amsterdam and was searching for some meetups and just 1 day later I found this post :(( I’m very sorry that I missed it.

Would be happy you can advice me where can I get this book? any cheap bookstores near Amsterdam central? or secondhand markets?

    Thank you

    Hello guys,

I hope you are all well and in a reading mood!

I researched the following platforms for our communication: WhatsApp, Slack, Signal, Telegraph, Discord, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, Meetup, Eventbrite, Goodreads, Storygraph and Bookclubs.

Considering that the common point of all our profiles on IxDF is IxDF itself and LinkedIn, that not all of us use the same social networks or work platforms and thinking in terms of accessibility, inclusivity and privacy safe, I created a group on LinkedIn, because it seems to me a good and easiest alternative (at least initially). This doesn’t prevent us from creating polls about other platform solutions to use in the future (Bookclubs seems to have the tools we need, it seems simple in terms of navigation and offers a good option for sending messages, for example).

The idea is that we have the freedom to decide this collectively later on, as well as the next readings and places to meet. For this reason, I chose to maintain an initial unit together, ensuring our contact and the exchange of ideas and keeping the alternatives open. So…

    SAVE THE DATE!

The group's first meeting will take place on January 5 (Thursday), 2023 at 7 pm CET in Amsterdam Centrum (I'm still verifying the exact location of the meeting, and I'll let you know in the LinkedIn group in a few days, once I have proper confirmation).

Here is the link to the group

Here is the event to add to the calendar

And here it’s our first reading:

    Happy reading to all!

Hi Jesus, I'm glad you're interested too! Thanks for the tip. Luckily for our group, we've already received an offer from a kind member to host the meeting!

On December 1st, I will list those interested, create the WhatsApp group and share the link (here and for everyone who sent me messages on LinkedIn). I will also let you know the location and time. Since December is usually a busy month for everyone, I thought I'd schedule the first meeting for January. I want to make sure people have enough time to read the book so that the session is as enlightening as possible.

The first book will be The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman. I know it's a classic, but I think it's a good first book to promote discussions for all participants, regardless of their levels of knowledge or experience, which can also be deepened if we think of it as a starting point to point out what has changed since the author wrote it.

I'm very excited to meet you all!

What is an IxDF Local Group and why should I join one?

An IxDF Local Group is a meeting point for people with a passion for design in your city.

Meetups are the heartbeat of IxDF Local Groups, whether we meet at a café, a creative space or a local company. There's nothing quite like the magic of meeting face-to-face to share ideas and inspiration.

We also host regular IxDF Design Dinners, where we enjoy great food and help each other learn and grow. Even a simple coffee meetup in a café can ignite collaborations and friendships that last a lifetime.

You'll also have a private and exclusive online forum where you can openly get help and career advice.

Simply put, we learn together and smile together.
