About the role

Design at [REDACTED] sits at the intersection of craft, research, and product intuition. Design systems is a growing team working on products that millions of people use daily, and on interactions that don't have established conventions yet.

Our work shapes how people experience AI: whether Claude feels like a tool or a collaborator, whether it earns trust or erodes it. We partner closely with engineers and researchers, often designing around capabilities that are emerging in real time. That means staying close to the models, prototyping rapidly, and being comfortable with ambiguity.

We care deeply about the details that make something feel polished, trustworthy and human. We ship fast and learn in the open. We'd rather get something in front of users and iterate than wait for perfection.

The Design Systems team exists to define and elevate the language of our UI and core interactions. Every Claude product, from [REDACTED] to Claude Code, shares one system, including the guidance Claude itself follows when it generates UI.

You would be joining an early-stage team, working with design engineers and product designers across the company.

You may be a good fit if you:

• Are as comfortable designing on canvas tools as you are building and prototyping within the product, and prefer to ship in days, not months.
• Have worked on design systems that balance simplicity with creative flair to produce beautiful products out of the box.
• Care about the smallest details as much as the big picture, from a pixel to how the whole app fits together.
• Make the people around you better through sharp, kind feedback and low ego.
• Get up to speed quickly and can make an impact on projects already in motion.

Key responsibilities

• Design and evolve the system, from foundations (colour, type, spacing, icons, tokens, theming) to components like menus, dialogs, sidebars and the chat composer.
• Design the expressive layer as a system, not one-offs: motion, illustration and icons that are brand and system at once.
• Make the system legible to Claude as well as people: the guidance, metadata and evals that show whether Claude uses it correctly.
• Partner with product teams: help designers and engineers apply the system well, and feed recurring gaps back into the system.
• Prototype in code and ship: land changes in the design-system package alongside engineers, using Claude Code in your own practice.

Minimum qualifications

• Strong visual and interaction craft.
• Experience building or working on a design system.
• Experience with design tokens, theming and accessibility standards.
• Fluency in whichever tool gets an idea across fastest, from Figma to code.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience building products at the highest level of craft.
• Has shipped voice or other beyond-the-screen work, with native mobile instincts.
• Has designed an icon set, illustration style or motion system used across products.
• Experience defining evals, lint rules or automated checks for UI quality.
• 8+ years of product design experience.

The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.

For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.

Annual Salary:

$305,000—$385,000 USD

Logistics

Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience

Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience

Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position

Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
